2008 Harvey T. Strosberg Essay Prize Winner Announced

Harvey T. Strosberg, Q.C. and Irwin Law Inc. are please to announce that the winner of the 2008 Harvey T. Strosberg Essay Prize for the best student essay on Class Actions in Canada is James Zaitsoff.

Mr. Zaitsoff recently completed his third year at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law. His prize-winning paper, “Two Steps Forward, No Looking Back: Confronting the Problem of the Indeterminate Plaintiff” will appear in Volume 5, Issue 2 of the Canadian Class Action Review. He will also receive a prize of $10, 000.

2008 OCLA bursary recipients announced

Irwin Law is pleased to announce that Gabrielle Gignac from the Victoria Haliburton Law Association and Mary-Jo Mustoe from the Welland Law Association have been awarded the 2008 OCLA Conference Assistance Bursary. This bursary, which is co-sponsored by Irwin Law and the Ontario Courthouse Librarians' Association (OCLA), enables members of the OCLA to attend the Canadian Association of Law Libraries conference. Many members work in small libraries and do not have budgets that can cover the cost of any continuing education opportunities.

Patrick Monahan awarded Mundell Medal

Patrick Monahan, Dean of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School and author of Constitutional Law in the Irwin Law Essentials of Canadian Law series, has been awarded the David W. Mundell Medal for distinguished contribution to the law in legal writing.

The award is named after the late David W. Mundell, a leading constitutional lawyer and the first director of the Ministry of the Attorney General’s Constitutional Law Branch in 1976. It has been awarded since 1986.

Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley presented the medal to Dean Monahan on February 4, 2008.

Richard Schneider receives Justice Award

Mr. Justice Richard Schneider of the Ontario Court of Justice has been awarded the 2007 Justice Award by the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ). The Justice Award is awarded every second year as a mark of distinction and exceptional achievement to a person who, in the opinion of a panel of independent judges, has shown distinctive leadership in the administration of justice in Canada, or who, by his or her writings or other endeavours, has made a significant contribution to the administration of justice in Canada. Harvey T. Strosberg, Q.C. and Irwin Law Inc. are very pleased to announce that this year's winner of the Harvey T. Strosberg Essay Prize for the best student essay on class actions in Canada is Michael P. A. Carabash.

Michael Carabash is a 2007 LL.B./M.B.A. candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School/Schulich School of Business. His paper, "Shareholder Class Actions in Ontario: Putting John C. Coffee Jr.’s Findings to the Test" will appear in Volume 4, Issue 2, of the Canadian Class Action Review. Mr. Carabash will also receive a prize of $10,000.
