Phillip Swain SJD, LLB (Hons), Dip Soc Studs, Grad Cert Uni Teach (Melb); MSW (Michigan); Grad Dip Comp (Deakin) has practiced as both lawyer and social worker since the early 1970s, and was until retirement in 2007 Associate Professor at the School of Social Work, Melbourne University where he was Head of School in 2001-2003.

He has published over fifty chapters and refereed journal articles on social work and law, ethics, child and family welfare, and social work education.

He co-edited with Professor Shurlee Swain To Search for Self: The experience of Access to Adoption Information (Federation Press, 1992), and with Graeme Brewer Where Rights are Wronged - a Critique of Australia’s Compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (National Children’s Bureau of Australia, 1993). The two earlier editions of In the Shadow of the Law were published in 1995 and 2002.
