J.M. Bennett
Dr. John Bennett is a distinguished legal historian with "an unusual combination of legal knowledge and experience, and historical scholarship" who "writes with a keen perception" (The Hon Murray Gleeson AC, Chief Justice of Australia).His range of publications is "prodigious" embracing "histories of the profession and the courts, studies and biographies of legal personalities, and researches in the history of substantive issues in the law" (emeritus Professor Bruce Mansfield).
Now retired, Dr. Bennett has practised extensively as both solicitor and barrister. He taught in the law schools of the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney. At the Australian National University, he held a Churchill Fellowship and was a Senior Research Fellow in the Research School of Social Sciences. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the second and third editions of the major encyclopaedic work, The Australian Digest and Editor of Australian Law Journal Reports.
