- Justice of the peace
-
-
The lowest level of judicial officer, usually not legally trained. Responsibilities are limited in criminal proceedings, especially under the YCJA, though a justice of the peace may conduct bail hearings. Responsibilities are broader, especially for adults, under provincial/territorial offence statutes (e.g., the Highway Traffic Act), including trials and sentencing.
